About Ebenezer
Located on the scenic banks of the Hawkesbury River, Ebenezer is a charming destination steeped in history. Settled by free settlers in 1803, it proudly hosts Australia’s oldest church (1809) and schoolhouse (1810). Many of the early settlers arrived aboard the Coromandel in 1802, and their legacy lives on in this peaceful riverside village.
The historic Ebenezer Church is a must-see, offering Devonshire tea and homemade jams (open Wednesday to Sunday). Visitors can explore the schoolmaster’s house and the tranquil cemetery, where many of the area’s pioneers, including members of the influential Grono family, are laid to rest. Captain John Grono, a skilled boatbuilder, and his wife Elizabeth were instrumental in the church’s development.
