A wheelchair taxi is designed to enable you and your wheelchair to travel from one place to another safely. They’re taxis that have been converted into Wheelchair Accessible Taxis. They either have a ramp or hoist which folds down that allows you to get into the taxis and wheelchair restraints to ensure your wheelchair does not move during your journey.
Whether taxis can accommodate passengers in wheelchairs depends on several factors, including the specific taxi service, local regulations, and the availability of wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) in the area.
A wheelchair Accessible Taxi can take upto 3 wheelchairs. Our Kia Carnivals take only one wheelchair plus 4 passengers and our Toyota Hiace’s can take upto two wheelchairs plus 5 Passengers.
In Sydney, like many other major cities in Australia, has a fleet of Wheelchair Accessible Taxis (WATs) that are specially designed to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges, including those using wheelchairs. These taxis are equipped with ramps or lifts to facilitate easy entry and exit for wheelchair users.
The Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TTSS) provides financial assistance for taxi travel to individuals with severe disabilities. Under this scheme, TTSS covers 50% of the total taxi fare, up to a maximum subsidy of $60 per trip. This means that TTSS contributes half of the cost of a member’s taxi fare, with a maximum subsidy cap of $60. In essence, TTSS ensures that eligible individuals receive financial support, covering up to $60 of their taxi expenses per trip.
